tissue layer

The second layer is often the tissue paper layer....

In this case, I've drawn on white tissue paper with colored pencil...

I then cut it to the shape I need to cover. In another technique I often use, I tear the altered paper randomly to create "happy accidents"...

I then secure it in place with matte medium both under the tissue and on top - sometimes I use medium for pastels on the top if I know I want to alter it again with pencil or watercolor.

  1. Jane, so in this last picture ("I secure it in place with matte medium...") is the tissue paper in place and it kind of disappears into the piece? I love the glimpse of the whole piece in the third photo. Nice shapes and color. I want to see the whole piece!

  2. Cate - yes - it's hard to tell that I used tissue paper sometimes. Sometimes I purposely get more air under the piece of tissue paper (using less medium under the layer) to give it a waxy look...or I layer several pieces on top of one another to make it more opaque. You will see the whole piece (by visiting my studio) and or after the patron has seen it. She doesn't want to see the whole thing until it's complete and I can deliver it. :-) Thanks for visiting!
